Ambassador's Biography

Ambassador Mohammad Anwar Anwarzai, a senior diplomat, is a well known Afghan personality dedicated to serving Afghanistan. He started his career as a civil servant in 1960.

Mr.Anwarzai was born in Kabul in 1937.He graduated from Nejat (Amani) High School in 1954 and earned his degree from Law Faculty of Kabul University in 1959. In 1970 he completed his education in International Relations and International Law at Oxford University in London, England, at a special program designed for diplomats of developing countries. During his tenure at the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr.Anwarzai served in various sections including at the Archives Department, the United Nations and International Conferences Department, the Economic Department, the Cultural Relations and at the Political Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul.

Mr.Anwarzai's first diplomatic assignment abroad was in the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations in New York, United States, where he as a junior member at the Mission. From 1964 to 1969 Mr. Anwarzai worked as Second Secretary directly under the supervision of the late Ambassador Abdul Rahman Pazhwak. During that time Mr. Anwarzai also represented Afghanistan in different committees during the 21st to the 24th Sessions of the United Nations General Assembly. He participated in the Human Right Commission's Sessions deliberations, OIC conferences and others International gatherings. From 1973 to 1976 Mr. Anwarzai served as the first Secretary in the Afghanistan Embassy in Moscow, USSR. From 1976-1978 he served as the Head of the Mission as Charged d' Affair in Tripoli, Libya.

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan forced Mr. Anwarzai and his family to become political refugees where they spent the next twenty three in exile. During 1979 to 1989 Mr. Anwarzai was actively involved in promoting the cause of Afghan Freedom Fighters, attending seminars, US Senate hearing, delivering speeches at conferences, dissemination information about the Afghan struggle for liberation and exposing the Soviet atrocities in Afghanistan. Mr. Anwarzai was also involved in organizing street demonstrations in front of UN and the Soviet Mission in New York.

Ambassador Anwarzai is also a co-founder and former member of the Board of Directors of the Global Partnership for Afghanistan where he served as the Vice-President and the Chief Operation Officer untile2005.The partnership is currently active in horticulture inside Afghanistan (see Http://www.gpfa.org).

In February 2002, immediately after the Bonn Agreement, Mr. returned to Afghanistan and was assigned to the Afghan Foreign Ministry as the Director of the Fourth Political Department responsible for European countries.

From 2004 to 2005 Mr. Anwarzai was appointed as Minister Counselor at the Afghanistan Mission to the European office of the United Nations in Geneva. In 2005 he was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Pakistan and presented his credentials to H.E Pervez Musharraf on July 31,2007.

Mr. Anwarzai's late father, Brigadier Mohammad Arif Anwarzai, studied at the Air Force Academy in Lille- France. Mr. Anwarzai is married to Fauzia Asif Anwarzai and they have four adult children: Mustafa Anwarzai, Senior System Analyst, Haroon Anwarzai, Psychologist, Mariam anwarzai, Qaim-Muqami Attorney and Zara Anwarzai, Vice-President of J.P and Morgan-Chafe.
